History of the Ga Adangbe People

Formation and Dormancy

The Ga-Adangbe Association of Toronto, initially formed by aspiring Ga-Adangbe individuals, faced a period of dormancy. In 1998, driven by a commitment to unity, progress, and cultural heritage education, the Ga-Adangbe community in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) sought to revive and rebuild the association.

Visionaries Behind the Revival
Mr. Enoch Oblitey (Ataa Nii) and Mrs. Hagar Oblitey played pivotal roles in envisioning the association’s revival. They extensively discussed the qualities of Mr. James Quarcoo (Nii Kwei Aku V), the current Ga-Mantse of Toronto, recognizing his character, values, and enthusiasm for community mobilization.

01Revival Initiation

Without delay, Mr. Oblitey approached Nii Kwei Aku with the revival idea, which he readily accepted. In the summer of 1998, Nii Kwei Aku V chaired the first Ga-Adangbe community meeting, focusing on modalities to revive the dormant association. A picnic at Rowntree Park in Toronto became a pivotal event, where participants were informed of the leaders’ intention to revive the association.

02Founding the Ga-Adangbe Association of Toronto

Members invested time and resources to turn the revival dream into reality. Nii Kwei Aku V ensured the proper registration of the association as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the culture and people of the Ga-Adangbe traditional area and their affiliates.

03Acknowledgments and Progress

The journey faced challenges, but determined individuals were instrumental in the association’s revival. Over the past 25 years, the Ga-Adangbe Association of Toronto has made steady and positive progress, maintaining a trusted, reliable, and dedicated membership committed to community safety and peace.
Expressing Gratitude

A heartfelt thank you goes to all who contributed to the association's current status, with special appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. Oblitey for their continual support. Recognition is extended to founding fathers, including Mr. Daniel Allotey, Mr. Alex Darku, Mr. Wilbeforce Quaynor, and Mr. Samuel Papanii Glover.
